How to Wakesurf Without an ACL

One of the very few positives to come out of my injury this year is that, for the first time in 3 years, I will be experiencing the great Australian summer. As some of you may know, the pinnacle for all summer celebrations is the classic Australia Day. Although the debate around its date is a hot topic at the moment, it doesnt stop aussies getting out to enjoy the Surf, Sand and Sun.

However while most people are thinking about the three S’. The people of the snowy mountains are more inclined to hope for calm waters, blue sky and the chance to get the boat out. Unfortunately my injury excludes me from most sports I have enjoyed in my free time, there is one that I am comfortably able to participate in. That sport is called Wakesurfing.

What is Wakesurfing

Wakesurfing is a water sport performed behind large wake boats with the help of a specialised wakesurfing board and a wake gate. It is done right behind the boat, within 2-5m, and the goal is to ride the wave produced by the boat without the aid of any ropes. It is essentially as the name describes, surfing on a boat wake.

As a simple explanation, the wake boats create a large wave by filling up with water in specific areas in the boat to make it heavier and harder to get up onto the plane. Once this is done the Wakegate extends out on the opposite side you want to ride and skews the boat a little, creating a smooth powerful wave that you can ride like you are surfing at the beach, nothing but the board is required.

Wakesurfing has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last 10 or so years as technology on newer wake boats giving riders the ability to create a bigger and more powerful wave to surf on. It is a low intensity, and specifically for me, low impact sport that is super fun.

Surfing Injured

As Stated before, wakesurfing is a super low impact sport, meaning I can get out and give it a gentle go before I go into surgery. Being very careful not to kick, or fall at an awkward angle in the water with. Even with my bad leg I was able to get up and glide along on the wake surfer riding the easiest wave of my life.

Unfortunately next week that luxury will dispensary disappear as I will be babysitting my poor ACL post surgery to ensure I don’t actually re-rupture it and have to go through another surgery. For now though, getting out behind the boat is keeping me from going crazy sitting indoors and I will take whatever I can get.

So as long as you take it easy, know your limits and do things you know how to do, ACL injuries are not the end of the world. Sure they suck, they severely limit your options, but finding those things that you can do is half the fun.
